How does a bespoke bridal commission actually begin?
It starts with a conversation, in the atelier or by video, where we talk through your ideas, your wedding date and your budget. From there we sketch, then agree a design and a quote before any metal is cut. Nothing is made until you are happy with the drawing.
How long does a bespoke ring take, and can you work to a wedding date?
Most commissions take eight to twelve weeks from approved design, and hand engraving can add a few weeks more. If your date is close, tell us at the first meeting and we will say honestly whether it is achievable. We would rather decline a rush than cut corners.
Should I reset stones from a family ring, and is that wise?
Often it is, and it keeps something of the family in the new piece. We examine the stones first under magnification, because older settings sometimes hide chips or worn claws, and we will tell you what is sound and what is not before we touch anything.
What can you actually restore on an antique watch?
We service movements, clean and re-oil them, repair or source parts, replace crystals and straps, and restore cases and dials where it is appropriate. We always advise keeping a dial original unless it is already damaged, as refinishing tends to reduce a watch's character and its value.
Do you give an estimate before starting restoration work?
Yes. We inspect the watch, explain what it needs in plain terms and give you a written estimate before any work begins. If we open a movement and find something unexpected, we stop and come back to you for a decision rather than carrying on regardless.
Where are you based, and can we deal with you by post?
We work from our London atelier and see clients by appointment. If travelling is awkward, many commissions and restorations are handled by insured post, with photographs and video at each stage, so you can follow the work without visiting in person.
